Launch of multilingual tax terminology volume

15 March 2022 -The Commissioner of  SARS, Edward Kieswetter, will launch a ground-breaking initiative for taxpayers. He will launch a volume of tax terminology in 10 official languages – with the exception of English. It is hoped that the volume will assist taxpayers to understand the tax environment in their mother-tongue. The virtual event will start at 9:00 on Wednesday 16 March 2022. Latest e@syFile version released

14 March 2022 – The latest e@syFile version was released on Friday, 11 March 2022. The changes include an adjustment to manual capture validation where commas are present in demographics fields to align with import validation and the SARS PAYE BRS, an adjustment to EMP501 submission file structure to align Tax Directive field(s) with the SARS PAYE BRS and an adjustment to validation for source code 7007 in respect of tax years 2015, 2016, 2017 to align with the SARS PAYE BRS. Media Release: Joint operation in KZN yields illicit cigarettes, narcotics

4 March 2022 – A joint operation involving the South African Revenue Service’s Customs officers, the SA Police Service (SAPS) and the Metro police led to the confiscation of over 2 million cigarettes and narcotics in Durban yesterday.

The bust took place at three residences belonging to a well-known cigarette supplier in Phoenix, Durban. During the search, a total of 2.31 million sticks of cigarettes valued at approximately R3.1-million were detained. The cigarettes were being sold at such a low value that it was clear no excise duties were being paid. A full audit will now be conducted on the goods.

Media Release: Scrap metal exporter found guilty of lying to Customs

3 March 2022 – A Cape Town-based export company and its director were found guilty of mis-declaring a consignment of scrap metal in order to avoid paying the recently introduced export duties on scrap metal.

The company, Scrapmania, and its director, Joseph Daniel Hurling, pleaded guilty on a charge of making a false declaration to Customs and both were fined R500 000, with Mr Hurling fined an additional R100 000 in the Durban Regional Court.
